How To Win Someone Over
A few days ago, I got connected to a business woman in Miami, FL.
Her story is just fascinating. Her father passed away when she was just 11-years-old, and she came to the United States (NYC initially) from Columbia, with very little money and a single mother raising a 2-year-old son, right after getting divorced. Can you imagine?
Without going into detail, I can tell you she had as humble beginnings as anyone can imagine.
Today, she has a high-paying job in business development, has started her own company in the grocery wholesaling & export business, and has several rental properties in Miami, FL.
She also donates lots of her money (she was one of the largest donors to the 2010 Haitian Earthquake). She gives openly and freely without expecting anything in return.
One thing she mentioned that I'll never forget is, "Ash, I want to be honest with you, I might have gotten really lucky at times, sometimes I feel I don't deserve the financial and social success I've had, but I really feel like because I'm so giving and I help out with anything I can, without expecting anything in return, somehow I receive positive energy from the universe and from others. And that, I feel, is what has helped me."
Throughout her career, she has had customers invite her to weddings across the country, customers send her gifts and endless kind notes, and has ultimately found fulfillment in her career and in her life because she was able to win people over.
She wins people over because she gives without expecting anything in return.
The last part is key: You cannot give something with an internal expectation to receive something in return. Your expectation actually changes your behavior, and causes you to come off as being insincere.
Keep giving without expectations my friends,
